Other options worth a look first

A short-term loan is one tool, and an expensive one. These routes often cost less or nothing. We'd rather you use one of them if it fits.

Help with the bill itself

Utilities, hospitals, landlords and phone companies usually have hardship plans or payment arrangements, and they rarely advertise them. Call before the due date, say plainly that you can't pay in full, and ask what programs exist. A payment plan with the biller almost always costs less than borrowing to pay the bill.

Local programs, by ZIP code

findhelp.org is a free, nationwide search of local programs: food, rent and utility help, medical care, transportation, job help and more. Enter your ZIP code and the need. You can also dial 2-1-1 from any phone to reach a local referral line.

A credit union small loan

Federal credit unions can offer "payday alternative loans" of roughly $200 to $2,000 with capped rates and terms of one to twelve months. You usually need to be a member, and joining is often as simple as a small deposit. The National Credit Union Administration has a locator for credit unions near you.

Nonprofit credit counseling

If the problem is debt rather than one bill, a nonprofit counselor can set up a plan with your creditors, often with reduced interest. Look for an agency that belongs to the National Foundation for Credit Counseling. The first session is usually free.

Employer and community routes

Some employers offer paycheck advances or small emergency loans at no interest; it's worth one quiet conversation with HR. Many larger churches, the Salvation Army and community action agencies run assistance funds for utilities and rent.

If you still decide to borrow

Borrow the smallest amount that solves the problem, read the total you will repay before you agree, and know the date of every payment. See how much the rate changes the bill. When you're ready, the request form is here.
